Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 Schedule Announced; Applications Open for 1,000 Pilgrims via Two Routes

The Government of India has announced the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 schedule, opening applications for 1,000 pilgrims across Uttarakhand and Sikkim routes. With strict eligibility, medical checks, and high-altitude challenges, the pilgrimage will run from June to August 2026.

The much-awaited Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 has officially been announced, with the Government of India opening the application process for one of the most sacred and challenging pilgrimages in the world. This year, a total of 1,000 यात्रियों will be permitted to undertake the journey in 20 batches, evenly split between two routes through Uttarakhand and Sikkim, marking a significant development in India-China pilgrimage coordination.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the pilgrimage will commence in June 2026 and continue until August 2026. Devotees undertake this journey to seek दर्शन of Mount Kailash, regarded as the abode of Lord Shiva, and Lake Mansarovar, both of which hold immense religious significance in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The complete यात्रा typically spans 23 to 25 days and involves traversing extreme high-altitude terrain.

The selection of pilgrims will be conducted through a fully transparent and computerized process, with applicants chosen via a random draw system. Authorities have ensured gender balance by maintaining proportional representation between male and female applicants.

Pilgrims will have the option to choose between two routes. The first route passes through Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and is considered the traditional and more challenging path. This route involves trekking through high Himalayan regions, with 10 batches comprising 50 pilgrims each. The journey begins in Delhi and proceeds through Dharchula in Pithoragarh district.

The second route operates via Nathu La Pass in Sikkim and is regarded as comparatively easier due to better road connectivity. This route also consists of 10 batches with 50 pilgrims in each group. The journey starts from Delhi and continues via Gangtok. Officials have indicated that this route is more suitable for elderly participants.

Strict eligibility criteria have been laid down by the government due to the physically demanding nature of the pilgrimage. Applicants must be Indian citizens with a passport valid until at least September 1, 2026. The age limit is set between 18 and 70 years as of January 1, 2026. Individuals suffering from serious medical conditions such as heart disease, asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, or epilepsy will be deemed ineligible. Overseas Citizen of India and Person of Indian Origin cardholders, as well as foreign nationals, are not permitted to apply.

The application process has been made entirely online. Applicants are required to complete registration, upload scanned copies of their passport and photograph, and select their preferred route and departure point. A single user ID can be used to submit a maximum of two applications.

Medical screening has been made mandatory in two phases due to the extreme altitude of approximately 19,500 feet, where oxygen levels are significantly low. The first phase of medical examination will take place in Delhi at designated hospitals and at the Indo-Tibetan Border Police base hospital. The second phase will be conducted during the journey at Gunji for the Lipulekh route and Sherathang for the Nathu La route. The second medical check-up will be carried out free of cost by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Logistics during the Indian leg of the journey will be managed by Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam and Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation, which will provide food, accommodation, and transportation. In the Tibet region, arrangements will be handled by Chinese authorities. While the central government does not provide direct financial assistance, some state governments may offer subsidies to their residents. Emergency helicopter evacuation services will be available, although the cost must be borne by the pilgrim and is subject to weather conditions and administrative approval.

The announcement of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 not only revives a deeply spiritual tradition but also underscores the logistical coordination required for such a high-altitude international pilgrimage, drawing attention to both its religious importance and the physical endurance it demands.
